Patient/caregiver was educated on precautions to be exercised while taking Montelukast as follows:

  1. Montelukast could be taken with or without food. If intake of Montelukast on empty stomach causes nausea and vomiting, taking the medication with a glass of water and some food or snack can help avoid these unpleasant gastrointestinal symptoms.
  2. Montelukast only helps with prevention of acute allergy and asthma episodes, but is not a permanent cure for these conditions. So, continue taking Montelukast, as ordered, even if there is no activation of symptoms.  Discontinuing the medication abruptly can result in activation of seasonal allergies and acute asthma episodes and should be done only on the recommendation of your physician.
  3. Montelukast use can result in flu like symptoms with mild fever, fatigue, dry cough, sore throat, sneezing, sinus irritation, and generalized body pains. Most of these side-effects with Montelukast intake can be self-limiting and resolve over a period of time. Report any unresolved flu like symptoms with Montelukast intake to your physician or other health care personnel, to accommodate necessary changes in your plan of care.
  4. Maintain strict compliance with intake of the medication as ordered, with regards to dosage and frequency, to derive the benefit of the medication.
