Patient/caregiver was educated on contraindications for using Valproic Acid as follows:

  1. Do not take Valproic Acid with alcohol or opioid pain medications, such as, hydrocodone and codeine, as they can further contribute to the dizziness caused by the medication, thus compromising safety. A number of OTC cough medications, antihistamines, and antianxiety medications, also can cause drowsiness upon intake and must be avoided taking along with Valproic Acid. Also, Valproic Acid use can result in damage to the liver and hepatotoxicity, which can be enhanced by concomitant intake of alcohol.
  2. Valproic Acid use in expectant mothers could harm the unborn baby and result in birth defects. So, Valproic Acid use should be avoided during pregnancy and in women planning to get pregnant. Women in the child bearing age group, taking Valproic Acid on a regular basis, must employ effective contraceptive measures in order to avoid getting pregnant.
