Patient/caregiver was educated on precautions to be exercised while taking Tessalon Perles as follows:
- Take this medication as ordered by your physician. Do not change the dose and frequency on this medication without consulting your doctor.
- Check for the integrity of the capsule before swallowing it. Make sure the capsule is not cut or broken. Damaged structural integrity of the capsule can result in release of the contents of capsule in the mouth and lead to loss of sensation and numbness of the oral cavity and pharynx.
- Swallow the Tessalon Perles capsule as a whole, using a glass of water. Do not chew or suck on the capsule, with the capsule in the mouth. Also, do not break or cut the capsule.
- Chewing the capsule in the mouth or cutting the capsule before swallowing it can result in release of the contents of capsule and absorption of the medication in the mouth, thus compromising the therapeutic benefit of medication intake. Also, chewing or sucking the capsule in the mouth can result in loss of sensation and numbness of the oral cavity and pharynx.
