Patient/caregiver was educated on precautions to be exercised while taking morphine as follows:
- Individuals develop tolerance to the dose of morphine and present with diminished therapeutic response over time. This can be an issue in with individuals taking morphine for the prolonged duration. Report to your physician regarding any blunting of pain control response.
- If you miss a dose, try taking it at the earliest notice of noncompliance. If it is time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and take the dose scheduled. Taking an extra dose to try making up for the missed dose can result in overdose and toxicity, causing severe depression of respiratory center in the brain and death. Notify your doctor and other health care personnel regarding your dose noncompliance.
- Observe compliance with any periodical lab draws ordered for evaluation of liver and renal functions.
- Do not store any leftover morphine pills or liquid medication, as they can be abused by individuals with history of addiction and substance abuse. Flush any unused pills or liquid medication down the toilet.
