Patient/caregiver was educated on contraindications for using Morphine as follows:

  1. Morphine must be avoided in individuals with history of severe head injury and brain damage and should be administered with extreme caution in individuals with history of respiratory disorders, such as, asthma and COPD. Individuals with history of head injury, brain damage, and severe respiratory disorders can be at a very high risk to present with depression of brain and respiratory center with morphine, leading to complications such as, coma, respiratory arrest, and can be fatal.
  2. Morphine use can result in extreme slowing of bowels, resulting in severe constipation. So, morphine is contraindicated or used with extreme caution in individuals with history of bowel obstruction, to prevent an acute episode of gastrointestinal obstruction and paralytic ileus. Individuals with history of sluggish bowel, following intake of morphine, can present with absent bowel movements, nausea and vomiting, loss of appetite, abdominal pain and colic, and sense of abdominal fullness.
  3. In the event of any current manifestations of any allergic response with this medication, report it to your physician or other health care personnel immediately, to check regarding your safety with continuing on intake of this medication.
