Patient/caregiver was educated on the side-effects of using Lioresal as follows:

Cardiovascular side-effects

  1. Lioresal carries the risk of depressing the cardiovascular center in the brain, which regulates the heart rate and blood pressure. Consequently, intake of Lioresal can result in low heart rate and blood pressure.
  2. This risk with Lioresal can be even high when it is taken along with any other products and medications causing central nervous depression, such as, alcohol, antidepressants, antianxiety medications, and sedatives.
  3. Hypotension and bradycardia, secondary to Lioresal intake, can contribute to the confusion and dizziness the medication can cause, thus significantly increasing the risk for fall and accidents.

 Withdrawal

  1. Abrupt discontinuation on Lioresal intake, after prolonged use, can result in exacerbation of muscle spasms and cramps, precipitation of seizure episodes, disturbance of sleep and insomnia. Individuals with history of mood disorders are at risk to present with hallucinations, confusion, anxiety, panic episodes, exacerbation of depression and mania symptoms. Discontinuing the medication should be gradual and only as directed and recommended by your physician.
