Patient/caregiver was educated on contraindications for using Fluticasone as follows:
- Fluticasone, being a steroid, carries the risk of sodium and water retention in the body. This retention of sodium and water in the blood can result in increased pressure on the walls of blood vessels and contribute towards elevated blood pressure. Fluticasone should be cautiously administered to individuals with history of hypertension and poorly controlled blood pressure numbers. Individuals can present with signs and symptoms of elevated blood pressure, such as, headache, fatigue, nosebleeds, episodes of confusion, diminishing vision, chest pain, palpitations, and pounding in the chest and neck.
- Fluticasone, being a steroid, carries the risk of sodium and water retention in the body, which can add extra load to an already failing heart, in individuals with history of congestive heart failure. Fluticasone should be avoided or cautiously administered to individuals with history of congestive heart failure. Individuals can present with signs and symptoms of worsening heart failure, such as, episodes of dizziness, fatigue, chest congestion, exacerbation of shortness of breath, dyspnea even at rest, irregular heartbeat, edema, and abnormal weight gain.
- Retention of fluid, secondary to Fluticasone use, can result in elevated intraocular pressure. Fluticasone should be avoided or cautiously administered to individuals with history of glaucoma. Individuals can present with signs and symptoms of worsening glaucoma, such as, episodes of headache, elevated intraocular pressure, and acutely progressive diminishing vision.
