Patient/caregiver was educated on contraindications for using Cinacalcet as follows:
- Optimum serum calcium levels are very important for normal cardiac function. Cinacalcet, by reducing the serum calcium levels, can result in poor cardiac function, lowered heart rate, and in severe cases also lead to development of cardiac arrhythmias. Upon Cinacalcet intake, individuals with history of cardiac complaints can present with further worsening of cardiac functional status, leading to severe debility. Cinacalcet must be avoided by such individuals or used with caution with cardiac function being evaluated periodically. Discuss with your physician regarding your history of cardiac conditions, if any, and your safety with Cinacalcet intake.
- Optimum serum calcium levels are very important for normal nerve functions, sensory awareness, mood, and behavior. Lowered serum calcium with Cinacalcet use can result in deterioration of mood and worsening of history of mood disorders. Cinacalcet must be avoided or used with caution in individuals with history of mood disorders, with symptoms for deterioration of mood disorders being evaluated periodically. Discuss with your physician regarding your history of mood disorders, if any, and your safety with Cinacalcet intake.
