Patient/caregiver was educated on the side-effects of using Cinacalcet as follows:

  1. Bone resorption and remodeling are continuous processes that must take place in a controlled balance to maintain bone strength and blood calcium levels.
  2. Cinacalcet, by mimicking the action of calcium in the blood, reduces the stimulation for secretion of parathyroid hormone by the parathyroid gland.
  3. Reduced parathyroid hormone secretion contributes to reduced resorption of bone and reduced release of calcium from the bone into the blood.
  4. Most of the side-effects of the medication stem from reduced bone resorption and consequent low levels of blood calcium.
  5. The side-effects of Cinacalcet vary widely, based on the dose the medication and extent of hypocalcemia.
