Patient/caregiver was educated on contraindications for using Carbatrol as follows:

  1. Carbatrol use can result in damage to the liver and hepatotoxicity. So, Carbatrol must be avoided or administered with caution in individuals with history of compromised liver function, as it can result in further deterioration of liver function in these individuals.  Discuss with your physician regarding your history of liver failure, if any, and your safety with Carbatrol intake. Also, as Carbatrol is mainly metabolized in the liver, the metabolism of Carbatrol can be compromised, if liver function is deficient. This can lead to increased blood levels of the medication for longer periods of time, resulting in toxicity and consequent side-effects. So, Carbatrol could be avoided in individuals with hepatic dysfunction and an alternative medication considered or used with caution, with frequent dose adjustments, periodical monitoring for liver function and development of any toxic symptoms.
  2. Carbatrol use in expectant mothers could harm the unborn baby and result in birth defects. So, Carbatrol use should be avoided during pregnancy and in women planning to get pregnant.
