Patient/caregiver was educated on the side-effects of using Topiramate as follows:

Central nervous system side-effects

  1. Topiramate use can result in depression of the central nervous system and lead to episodes of confusion, hallucinations, dizziness, and light-headedness. Also, increased blood ammonia levels secondary to topiramate intake can add to the confusion and dizziness caused by topiramate. Individuals taking topiramate can also present compromised memory and trouble concentrating.
  2. Topiramate use can result in some tingling and numbness in the extremities, with some altered sensations.
  3. Topiramate use, especially in individuals with history of anxiety and bipolar disorder, carries risk of deterioration of mood disorders and worsening of clinical symptoms of mood disorders. Individuals can present with complaints such as, feeling low, anxiety, panic attacks, trouble sleeping, gross appetite changes, impulsiveness, agitation, aggression, and suicidal thoughts.

Teratogenic side-effects

  1. Topiramate use in expectant mothers could harm the unborn baby and result in birth defects. So, topiramate use should be avoided during pregnancy and in women planning to get pregnant. Women in the child bearing age group, taking topiramate on a regular basis, must employ effective contraceptive measures in order to avoid getting pregnant.
