Patient/caregiver was educated on contraindications for using Metoclopramide as follows:

  1. Metoclopramide use for prolonged periods can result in increased secretion of the hormone prolactin from the pituitary gland. Increased prolactin secretion in males can result in reduced body & facial hair, growth of breast tissue, reduced sexual interest, and impotence. Increased prolactin secretion in women can result in excessive growth of breast tissue, milk production without pregnancy, reduced menstruation or absent menstruation, vaginal dryness, painful intercourse, reduced sexual interest, and infertility. Metoclopramide use must be avoided in individuals with history of increased prolactin hormone secretion. Discuss with your physician regarding your history of increased prolactin secretion, if any, and your safety with Metoclopramide use.
  2. Metoclopramide carries the risk of causing and aggravating some underlying cardiac arrhythmias, leading to severe debility and death. During intake of Metoclopramide, report to your physician regarding any worsening signs and symptoms of arrhythmias, such as, frequent episodes of fatigue, lightheadedness, near fainting, shortness of breath, chest pain or discomfort, and/or pounding heartbeat, so that, your dosage on the medication could be revised or alternative plan considered. Metoclopramide intake must be avoided or used with extreme caution in individuals with history of heart disease and arrhythmias.
