Patient/caregiver was educated on precautions to be exercised while taking Megestrol as follows:
- Do not change the dose on this medication without consulting your doctor. Take the medication dose at the same time, every day, for the duration prescribed, to avoid forgetting the intake of medication.
- Megestrol can induce some nausea, vomiting, and stomach upset, when taken on empty stomach. Taking the medication with a glass of water and some food or snack can help avoid these unpleasant gastrointestinal symptoms.
- Megestrol intake, secondary to the steroid activity it has, can result in elevated blood sugars. Diabetic individuals, especially with history of poorly controlled blood sugars can be at increased risk for episodes of severe hyperglycemia, secondary to megestrol intake. Individuals can present with symptoms of hyperglycemia such as, episodes of confusion, dry mouth, frequent urination, increased thirst and hunger, dry skin, and blurred vision. Closely follow for these signs to be reported to your physician. Observe compliance with everyday blood sugar recordings and log maintenance of the readings. Report to your physician regarding any consistent poorly controlled blood sugar readings, for a possible appropriate change on your medications. Observe compliance with recommended diabetic management measures and dietary limitations suggested.
