Patient/caregiver was educated on precautions to be exercised while taking Vitamin B12 as follows:
- Do not take vitamin B with alcohol, as alcohol can consume vitamin B for its metabolism, thus resulting in deficiency of the supplement. In individuals with deficiency of the vitamin, this can compromise the therapeutic benefit of supplement intake.
- Do not take Vitamin B12 with opioid pain medications, such as, hydrocodone and codeine, as these products can add to the dizziness and confusion caused by Vitamin B12, and contribute to falls and accidents. A number of OTC cough medications and antihistamines, muscle relaxant medications, and antianxiety medications, can potentiate the confusion caused by Vitamin B12 and so, must be avoided taking along with Vitamin B12.
- Vitamin B12 use can induce stimulation of the bowels and diarrhea, which can be self-limiting. Compliance with daily fluid intake and rehydration measures recommended can help with relief from fluid and electrolyte loss secondary to diarrhea. If you experience any unresolved and continuing diarrhea, report it to your physician for any further measures to be considered.
- Increasing the intake of foods, naturally rich in Vitamin B12, such as, meat, poultry, eggs, milk, and dairy products, can significantly help offset the symptoms of Vitamin B12 deficiency.
